At least Sergio Garcia has something positive to think about this week as he tries to move on from blowing a six-shot lead while losing the Wachovia Championship on Sunday in Charlotte.
Garcia is the defending champion in the EDS Byron Nelson Classic that begins Thursday near Dallas.
“You don’t block it out,” said Garcia, when asked how he would forget the loss. “Why should I block it out?” He explained that he played well, reaching 12 under par in three rounds at Quail Hollow and matched par in the final round but was caught by Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk, who shot 66 each to tie him. Singh went on to beat him in a playoff.
“I’m disappointed I didn’t finish the job,” Garcia said. “It would have been nice to have won, but we’ll have to wait for another year.”
Garcia’s loss, coming after he appeared to have the tournament won, is an increasing pattern on the PGA Tour. Crestor, one of the Tour’s sponsors, has a program that donates money to charity in the name of the tournament and the leader through three rounds. In 16 events in which the program has been active this year, only five times has the third-round leader gone on to win.
