CHARLOTTE - To Sergio Garcia, swing changes and his quest for a major championship are old news, but each time he has a good round on the PGA Tour, the questions follow.
Garcia is 25. It seems like a long time ago when he finished second to Tiger Woods in the 1999 PGA Championship and was the favorite of the fans. It appeared he would win a major before he was 21, but he has gone through a long period of change in his golf game and just now appears to be nearing a level that will allow him to take the next step of his career and win a major.
He shot 6-under-par 66 in the first round Thursday of the Wachovia Championship, an event that has attracted Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson. (Related item: Wachovia Championship results)
Garcia outplayed each of them to take a two-stoke lead, but when he described his round, he said it could have been better.
“I’m happy,” he said, “but it could have been an unbelievable round. I could have shot 61 or 62.
