Male Players to welcome Michelle Wie if she qualifies

The entry of female players in the mainstream PGA Tour Tournaments has often been controversial. However, some of the top players including Colin Montgomerie, Ernie Els, and Nick Faldo have said that they welcome the potential entry of young Michelle Wie in this year’s British Open as long as she qualified.

Wie got a potential chance to play in the prestigious tournament after Royal and Ancient Club allowed women players to enter and play the July 14-17 Open Championship. The club is yet to announce the qualification requirement for the women player but Wie gets special status considering she was invited to play in the John Deere Classic in Illinois on July 7-10. The US Tour event carries an exemption into The Open for the leading non-exempt player.

Colin Montgomerie had this to say about this possibility of facing the 15-year-old teenager: “Good luck to her. I have no objections at all provided it’s not an invited situation, if someone has qualified as I had to last year.” He was supported by Three-time British Open winner Nick Faldo who said: “If you can tee it up and earn your spot you can’t knock that at all. I don’t think there has to be a male-female agenda if you’re good enough to play.”
